Follow is a friend? No. It's different purposes, Friends system is for making friends and following is for the person's posts to show up in your news feed list.

I believe he means it like a follow can be 1 sided, whereas a friend system would require a mutual agreement

Thanks for your suggestion but I don't think the add-on will add any value to the forum or serve any purpose ATM.
